parent-conference k12 talking-points partnership behavior
by @iberry420Education
Prep a K-12 parent-teacher conference as a partnership: timed agenda, 2-3 evidenced strengths first, the hard message without character labels, anticipated reactions, and shared next steps. Use when a teacher wants conference talking points, what to say to a parent, a tough grades or behavior conversation, or a 15-20 minute conference plan. Education only, not IEP legal drafting.

SYNCED SUMMARY (from SKILL.md)
# Talk Home

Parents remember how the talk felt more than the data dump. Plan a partnership, not a performance review.

Inspired by mohitagw15856/pm-claude-skills parent-conference-prep (MIT). Original Grok remake. Complements glow-grow (student feedback), lesson-block (the period itself), pulse-check, score-grid. Education only.

Read `references/talk-rails.md` before you write. Fill the three templates under `templates/`.

## When to use

- Conference talking points for a 15-20 minute parent meeting
- What to say when grades, work habits, or classroom behavior need a hard message
- A first conference or a follow-up that still needs a shared plan
- Translating RTI, standard codes, or classroom shorthand into plain parent language

## When NOT to use

- Comments on student work, not a parent meeting → use glow-grow
- Tomorrow's period packet → use lesson-block
- Tiny CFU, quiz items, or a scoring rubric → use pulse-check / quiz-bank / score-grid
- IEP or 504 legal instruments, diagnoses, eligibility determinations (do not draft legally-defensible IEP goals)
- Live exam keys, LMS logins, or inventing student PII

## Inputs

Gather what you can. Infer missing pieces and LABEL guesses. Ask at most two questions if critical data is missing.

- Grade band, subject, and conference length if known (default 15-20 minutes)
- What is going well, with a classroom scene if the teacher has one
- The concern in observable terms (work, attendance pattern, classroom behavior)
- Any numbers, work samples, or notes the teacher already has (do not invent incidents)
- What the teacher has already tried, and what they can offer next
- Whether an IEP/504 already exists (refer, do not draft)

## Procedure

1. Read `references/talk-rails.md`. Refuse diagnoses, meds, home-situation speculation, invented incidents, IEP legal drafting, live exam keys, LMS logins, and extra PII.
2. Lock the job as a partnership conversation. The feeling of the meeting outlasts the spreadsheet.
3. Fill `templates/agenda.md`. Time a 15-20 minute arc: warm open, strengths, one concern, shared plan, close on partnership. Cut data dumps that steal the last five minutes.
4. Fill `templates/strengths-concern.md`. Write 2-3 genuine strengths, each with a specific classroom example (not "good kid"). Then the hard message: observed pattern plus impact. Never character labels (lazy, disruptive, unmotivated). Translate jargon into plain language.
5. Anticipate defensiveness, blame, overwhelm, and disengagement. Draft a short de-escalating reply for each likely reaction. Stay on the same side of the table.
6. Fill `templates/next-steps.md`. Name 2-3 shared next steps: one teacher action, one parent action, and a check-back date. Small and doable this week, not a new personality.
7. Label every inference as a guess. If a critical fact is missing (the actual concern, or whether this is academic vs behavior), ask at most two questions, then proceed with labeled guesses.
8. Screen the draft: no extra PII, no invented incidents presented as fact, no diagnosis or meds talk, no sexual content involving minors, no self-harm examples. Crisis language only: US 988 if a self-harm situation appears, then stop and hand to a human.
9. Deliver the three templates. One closing line: this is conference prep for a partnership talk, not an IEP and not student-facing comments.

## Output format

- Timed agenda (open, strengths, concern, plan, close)
- Strengths-and-concern card (2-3 evidenced strengths, one hard message, jargon translations, likely reactions)
- Next-steps card (teacher action, parent action, check-back date)
- One line: parent conference talking points; not glow-grow comments, not an IEP

## Safety

- Follow `references/talk-rails.md` with no exceptions.
- No student PII beyond what the teacher already provided.
- No invented incident details presented as fact.
- No diagnoses, meds, or home-situation speculation.
- No sexual content involving minors. No self-harm examples.
- Age-appropriate. Crisis: US 988 if a self-harm situation appears.
- Original student/parent-facing language only.

## Stop conditions

- Three templates delivered, or refused for IEP/504 legal drafting / diagnosis / missing concern with no way to proceed / glow-grow comments / lesson-block packet / live keys / extra PII
